Kelt strode out of the council and looked around for Henrik. He was nowhere to be seen.

“Sir!” Criske called. “Sir, should I go get Taeris?”

“No,” Kelt said over his shoulder, “you’re going to find me your fellow apprentice and drag him back here. I’m going to grab Glenna, and we’re going to tell Xeile about his new employment.”

“Why are you bringing Glenna?”

“Insurance that Xeile doesn’t change his mind and try to murder me.”

“And you think Glenna would stop him?”

Kelt sucked in a breath. “Good point. I’ll try to win her over first, and then we can work together to convince him. Go find Henrik so I can have a word with him. We’ll meet up at the library. Any luck, I’ll have Xeile in tow, and we can finally get back on this case.” Criske saluted and ran off, leaving Kelt to his own devices.

It was midafternoon, and an absolutely sweltering day. The sun seemed determined to force everyone to run for cover. Kelt trudged his way to the best place he could guess Glenna would be: Usumi’s quarters. Sure enough, after a few knocks, Glenna called through the door in a groggy voice, “Yeah?”

Kelt immediately turned around. Glenna wasn’t wearing her standard uniform. She was in her underthings and nothing else. Glenna’s daze seemed to disappear in an instant. “Oh, damn it!” She slammed the door shut. Around five minutes later, she opened the door in full uniform.

“Sorry about that,” she said. “I was up late last night doing some reading on magical creatures and shamans. Must’ve fallen asleep. What can I do for you…sir?”

The weapons master loosed a sigh. “I need your help with Xeile. I’ve managed to get the council here to approve of using his help. I’d like to bring you along when I go get him…and bring you onto the case… He needs someone he can trust. Right now, you’re the only one he has. Do you understand where I am coming from? I could order you to help, but I really don’t want to.”

Glenna took a deep breath, rubbing her temples with her fingertips. “If it’s for his sake, then yes. I will help you.”

Kelt felt his heart leap. It was the first good news he had gotten all day. Now if he could get some sleep, he’d be in a really grand state.

Except there were murder victims. And a monster on the loose. And an undead who hated him for murdering his mother. And that mother’s writ of execution was strange to start with.

Other than that, life would be grand.

Sighing, he set off with Glenna, and the two of them traveled in awkward silence. “So…are you and Xeile, an…item?”

Glenna looked up at him with slight disgust but answered anyway. “Yes. We happen to be engaged now.” She held up her hand, showing a small wooden ring. “Though he coughed up blood as he proposed and asked if I wanted to leave him in the process.” She looked at the ring, and a warm smile crossed her face.
